Bickerton commits to UNC, embraces coaching, campus fit

Medina, OH— Austin Bickerton’s recent commitment to the University of North Carolina wrestling program marks an exciting new chapter for the standout Highland High School wrestler and his family. The decision was guided by the “overall vibe of the team,” as Austin shared, along with his love for the city, campus, and a coaching staff he trusts to help achieve his goals.

Austin emphasized the genuine care UNC’s coaching staff shows for every wrestler. “I truly believe their coaching staff cares and believes in their wrestlers. They look for the most opportunities to help out every wrestler.” This connection played a key role in his commitment, forming an immediate strong bond that only deepened as relationships grew.

To Austin, representing UNC is deeply meaningful: “It means everything to me to represent UNC. It’s been a long journey and to wrestle at a school like UNC is truly amazing. I’m super excited.” He sees his wrestling skills fitting seamlessly with the Tar Heels’ style, stating, “The way I see my skills fitting in at UNC is just working on the same things I’ve always been good at along with implementing their coaching style to tweak my wrestling for the better.”

His excitement extends to working alongside teammates and coaches from Ohio, including his twin brother Brandon and 2027 commit Kane Shawger, as well as assistant coach Ben Darmstadt. “Ohio is one of the top states in the country and I’m excited to work with these guys,” Austin said.

Austin’s goals are clear and ambitious: “My goals are to wrestle to the best of my ability and to become a national champion. That’s what the coaches at UNC preach—to reach for the stars.” Beyond individual success, he hopes to elevate the Tar Heels’ team status nationally: “I hope to bring the Tar Heels to be one of the best teams in the country and ranked higher than they already are.”

Though Austin’s wrestling journey has been marked by notable achievements like his USA Wrestling Fargo All-American status and placing high at the tough Ohio state tournaments, he remains motivated by a love for the sport. “What motivates me to keep wrestling is just my love for the sport. I truly love every aspect of wrestling. I think that’s hard for some people to do but I love all of it.”

Austin recalled memorable moments on the mat, including a thrilling win at the US Open semifinals where he scored late to win 7-6 after being down 6-3 with just seven seconds left. He learned important lessons from tough opponents, notably that “offense wins championships in wrestling not defense. You got to put points on the board if you want to win.”

Balancing academics and athletics is also a priority for Austin. “I plan to treat the classroom just like I treat the wrestling mat. That is to put my all into every test, quiz, and assignment.” Looking ahead, he envisions a future that could blend his passions for wrestling, coaching, and mixed martial arts: “I could see myself wrestling on the Olympic stage but my goal has always been to be a UFC fighter when I grow up. Also, I love to coach so maybe college coaching is in the cards for me.”

Austin’s support system is one of his greatest strengths. His high school coaches, including Coach Lazar and Coach Dave Habat, have been integral to his growth both on and off the mat. He recalls advice like “…‘nobody cares’ if something is bothering you. If you are hurt you can’t let it bother you because everyone around you and the person you will wrestle don’t care.” His family has been equally important, with his father pushing him to be his best version and his twin brother Brandon serving as a constant drill partner and source of friendly competition.

The camaraderie among teammates at Highland High School also inspires Austin daily. “My teammates are the best. They come in ready to scrap every day and there are no easy goes for me in the room which makes me work so hard in practice that makes matches easy.” The accountability and trust they share is what makes the team special to him.

Austin Bickerton’s commitment to UNC reflects not only his wrestling talents but also his dedication, mindset, and community values.
